In a move that could be the final nail in Apple’s coffin, the iPhone maker is expected to unveil a new Google Home product on Monday.
The Home was announced at the Google I/O conference in June, and it’s a big step toward a standalone device that can work with the iPhone’s other Google services, Google Now and Google Maps.
Google has been working with manufacturers to create a unified interface for their home appliances and other smart devices, and the Home will make the HomeKit platform a reality.
But with Apple’s launch of the iPhone 8 and the iPad Pro, Google is expected now to focus on a single unified interface that integrates Google services.
“The Google Home has a great pedigree and the potential to be the most compelling product in the Home category,” said Marc Benioff, chief executive of Beniofs software company Bluecoat.
“But I don’t see us having to wait until October for a Home product, so we’re looking at it as the next logical step.”
Beniof said he believes Apple’s HomeKit product will debut on the iPhone X in the second half of 2018, with a new version likely to launch a year later.
“It’s not going to be like the iPhone and iPad, where the first version of the product is out and the user experience is going to work,” Benioft said.
“We’re going to have to wait for the next version of HomeKit.”
Apple CEO Tim Cook said on a conference call with analysts last week that Apple is “committed to getting our users up and running” with HomeKit, which is a service that integrates devices, apps and services into the iPhone.
“I can tell you right now that HomeKit is coming,” Cook said.
He also said Apple will have more announcements about HomeKit on its conference call on Monday, but it will be a standalone product.
“If you’re a developer and you’re using a Google product, you can do it with Home,” Cook told analysts.
Cook also said he expects to unveil HomeKit at the WWDC keynote in June. “
HomeKit is really just a way to enable you to build the Google app on top of your device.”

“What we’re going into is a whole new ecosystem,” Cook added.
Now that Home is a thing, and we’re really excited about it, we’re excited to build that ecosystem.”
